General

  • - How can I backup my settings?
  • Most installations of Aeris Calendar use the "Application Data" folder to store the settings. The location of this folder depends on the Windows version you're using:

    • Windows 98/ME:
      C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Aeris Calendar\
    • Windows 2000/XP:
      C:\Documents and Settings\{user}\Application Data\Aeris Calendar\
    • Vista/Windows 7:
      C:\Users\{user}\AppData\Roaming\AerisCalendar\

Save the entire folder and restore it to the corresponding folder on the target computer.

If using a portable installation, it is recommended that you backup the entire installation folder, which will also contain the "Settings" subfolder.

  • - Can I run Aeris Calendar on a portable device?
  • Only registered users can run Aeris Calendar on a portable device.

To use Aeris Calendar on a portable device:

    1. Move all installation files to the folder on your flashdrive (ie. all the files in C:\Program Files\Aeris Calendar\)
    2. Create a new file in the new folder on your portable device called 'local.dat' (this file may be empty)
    3. If you want to use your existing settings, you'll need to locate your "Settings" folder and copy this folder beneath the new folder on your flashdrive, see the backup faq for more information

You should have a directory structure like the following on your flash drive:

    F:\Aeris\Events\
    F:\Aeris\Images\
    F:\Aeris\Settings\
    F:\Aeris\Sounds\
    F:\Aeris\Themes\
    F:\Aeris.exe
    F:\local.dat
    etc...

Options

  • - What does the option "Graphics Quality" do?
  • When this option is set to "high" you will notice an improvement in the quality of many of the graphics in Aeris Calendar including the background image, icons, clock etc. Setting this to "low" will improve performance when the Calendar is drawn. The difference in quality may be subtle in some cases and very noticeable in others -- it depends on the image and your system. You may notice the most difference on the edges of objects, and the most significant differences can be detected when you use a rendered image such as "Bubbles" or "Stars" as opposed to a photograph. Modern systems should set this to "high" without noticing any degradation in performance.

Themes

  • - What themes are available when using a random theme?
  • Aeris Calendar will look in the "Themes" subfolder of the installation folder (ie. C:\Program Files\Aeris Calendar\Themes\). Images that do not have a theme file (.wct) associated with them should be placed in the "Images" subfolder (ie. C:\Program Files\Aeris Calendar\Themes\Images). You can also create your own subfolders for easier organization. Theme or image filenames that begin with "event" will not be available for random themes. These filenames are reserved for use with events, and this prevents a Christmas-based theme from appearing in July.

  • - What is a "Theme Pack" and how do I use it?
  • A theme pack is a way to organize various themes and display a theme based on certain conditions. Currently, theme packs only uses the current month as a criteria, but this will be enhanced in future versions (such as event-based themes -- Christmas, New Year's Day, birthdays, etc).

For an example ThemePack file, Download Calendar.wtp. You can open it in a text editor to see how it works. Copy the ThemePack file into the same directory as the themes:
    c:\Program Files\Aeris Calendar\Themes\
For this particular ThemePack, you will need the twelve themes designated to be used with the Theme Pack.

Weather

  • - Why is the "Feels Like" temperature so different than from other weather sources?
  • Aeris Calendar gets the current weather data from AccuWeather and their RealFeel® temperature is based on many factors including sunshine intensity, cloudiness, elevation and more. You can read more about AccuWeather's RealFeel® here:
    http://www.accuweather.com/iwxpage/adc/help/pr_realfeel.htm

  • - Why doesn't the weather update after it has been checked?
  • In most cases, the weather data collected from the server only updates about once an hour. More frequent updates may occur when there is severe weather. For this reason, it is recommended that you set weather checks for about every 15 or 30 minutes.
